55 watt tube amp

Finally wrapped up the guitar amplifier conversion from a 1940 / 50s record player. It is a 55 watt tube amp. 

Open backed to let the tubes breathe. 

The front flips up if ever this configuration would work better. It also allows access to the electronics.

In the studio, finally'

48x40 . . . PINK

Finally got up to the studio to work on something unrelated to a home improvement project (kitchen & bathroom upgrades / repairs amongst others . . . New butcher block counter tops to the left). Put down some thick flat enamel to start something new. No clue where this is going to go, but that is part of the fun. To be continued . . .

Guitar

I talked the guy at the Seward Attic down to 22.50 (from $45) on this broken guitar. Brought it home and put in a nine volt battery for the pickup . . . Played it through the amp with these three strings, and got sound.

That evening I glued and clamped the neck. The fretboard was still in good shape and the guitar has a truss rod . . . 

With the neck securely clamped, I started chipping away the finish with a razor blade. 

The next evening after a little more work with the blade and a vigorous sanding of the neck, I put. On some strings and took it for a test drive. I think eventually something will happen with the finish . . . I might paint it or something, but for now it is a solid little beater. I still need to adjust the action a bit, but that is a minor tweak. . . 

Apparent . . .

Two fresh editions of the same print, one with two colors and one edition with the final color.

Above is the single color edition. 

The two color print has a subtle radial gradient and a large letterforms in full intensity. I was thinking that this might capture the magic of some of the test prints.

Here is a detail of a test print over one of my student's prints. His technique / aesthetic and mine are quite different, but they compliment each other quite nicely.

Conserve

Two color, three screen, print on map. The emulsion blew out a bit over the face, but it ended up creating an interesting, if not somewhat ambiguous image. The clor on this map is pretty dope as well.

Reclaimed wood

This is a board off of a shelf that was in the basement when we bought the house. . . The white splotch of paint at the top is going to get screen printed this week.

Printing

This afternoon I spent an hour or so working in the printmaking studio. First I reclaimed a few screens then pulled a small edition of two color prints on maps. The photo did not turn out. Let's blame the equipment rather than my technique.

A third panel that is nearly complete, though it seems to be calling for a stenciled word. Something profound and meaningful . . . or just obnoxious.

The print is around 18x24 on a series of found maps. 

I also have an edition that is not on the maps. The ink is semi-transparent,
so the detail of the map shows through in an interesting way.

throw back

Came across this series in a box while I was cleaning out the basement storage area. These are were made as "weeklies" at the time that the studio was in the basement of the house. I can't believe I was spray-painting down there . . . so much. 

Jesus Panel

30 x 48 inch panel for the brick walls next to founders. This will be one of eight that correspond with the theme verse for the year. This is a collaboration between myself, professor Robson and six of our top students. Mine is almost finished, I am still considering some type at the bottom. Latex, spray paint and marker (at this point).

From a few weeks back, the speak panel evolution.

A few drastic changes and suddenly it seems complete. Or at least complete enough to move out of the studio.

Just a detail that needs to dry, but the texture here was just to good to pass up. It has been a while since I have been able to move paint around . . . something.

Metal panel 3 and 4

Another in the metal panel series. I am thinking of calling it "nothing new" since it is territory previously explored with vintage images and panels used in a previous iteration. I think this one is more successful than the previous few, it may have to do with the scale of the figures.

Anther work in progress.  . . . The storage at the top of the stairs in the studio has finally been enclosed. There is some built in storage on the south side of it that fits the bass amp nicely . . . The doors were cut down a bit to fit, but I like the effect of the panel doors. Still working on the mud. It seems like I get a few minutes here and there to do it.
