Weekend Work 8/20

Worked with tape and paint pattern this weekend, below are progression shots of what happened on a few panels:

With a portion of the tape removed and the remaining paint and tape in place this is dynamic. I'd like to intentionally try and work some patterns and images this way at some point.

Work from 8/15 - 8/18

Prepared surface ready for another oil sketch.

Getting ready to do some pattern work, masking tape starting to be applied. Some work was also done to the portrait that you can see peaking out from behind the pattern piece.

So, this is where the pattern piece ends. I am going to throw one more layer of clear on it to get the entire surface a consistent sheen. The word comes from a sketch done during the faculty forum last week. It is very different from the sketch, but the idea of  "speak" as a command and statement has some meaning . . . it becomes decorative and loses some of that meaning or communication which is an interesting contradiction. 

Here is a detail to show the layering and build up that has taken place. This piece is approaching the work flow / method of working in the sketchbook . . . so in that regard I think it has been a good exploration. How does that translate into the books? I'm not sure yet, but we'll see. 

Here's Ethan's painting from Tuesday night. He managed to escape without getting paint on himself, but I got splattered with pink from about two feet away . . .

Some more changes to the pattern piece.  

 This is at the end of the evening on Saturday. 

 There is some writing, at this point just three lines, but we'll see where it goes.

Here is a close up of the subtle texture. This is created with gloss clear spray paint over top of the green.

So, the pattern piece has taken a bit of a turn. I became interested in the interaction of the flat black paint and the built up gloss paint below. It creates a subtle visual texture. From a distance it may seem that it is a poor imitation of a Rothko color field . . . but that will change in the coming days.

 Here is the working space at this point. You can see my black tool box that will hold my art supplies and the drafting table that served as our dining room table for several years.

 This is part of a larger stencil cut for the department of Music @ CUNE

This is a textural exploration which also plays with the flat black paint. This and a second piece were scanned and inverted to white and will serve as the texture on a graphic design project.
