ruddy duck

I managed to spend some time in the studio drawing today. This started as a quick sketch of the Ruddy Duck and ended up being a bit more involved. This seems to capture a bit of the drawing style that I have been using in the sketchbook. It will probably continue to evolve.

A detail of the mark making. This is drawn and painted over and drawn again.

  1. The white value in the duck's body is more intense than the white of the panel and it gives it this pop off the surface, which is quite interesting and pleasing to look at.

Did you paint over and redraw because you weren't satisfied with the first attempt? Was there some other motivating factor there?

  2. I am building tone by drawing and painting with spray paint (it remains semi-transparent). For instance in the bill and head there are at least two values of 'grey' that you can see, but those are built with several applications.

Painting over it is really just an attempt the mark into the surface rather than editing.
