Pine Brae - Looking into the woods on a Foggy Night

Looking into the woods across the street from my childhood home on a foggy night. Charcoal and gouache.

Pine Brae Continued

This top drawing is starting to display some of the mood and simplicity of drawing that I hoped this series of drawings could contain. Now to do more.

This smaller drawing is a bit less successful in the sense that it feels caught between letting the medium do it's thing and forcing the charcoal to render. However, it led to the drawing above so I think things are moving in the right direction.

boggs sketchbook

Here's a few recent spreads for the bogzilla sketchbooks. It looks like there may be a theme to the exploration . . .

Taking a closer look at Street View images and place by executing larger charcoal drawings.

Sketchbook

Initial thinking and sketching utilizing Google Street-view, memory and direct observations of suburbia. The idea of doing landscapes in this way continues to intrigue me.

Randomness from life, news/headlines.

Selfies, sans-smartphone.

metal panel

Just a detail that needs to dry, but the texture here was just to good to pass up. It has been a while since I have been able to move paint around . . . something.

New Ideas, Old Panels Reconfigured

13 new 48"x48" panels ready for new ideas - thinking landscapes . . .

Removed the tarps from panels that have been set aside since May of 2012. Finding and working new arrangements to submit to a Spring 2014 show in St. Louis.

Looking to get away from the panels for a different body of work: oil on cotton and plastic.  Saturated shirt in matte medium and then allowed to dry prior to applying oil paint. The shirt was not as rigid as desired so another attempt with a t-shirt and polyurethane is underway.

Friday afternoon

I put this together during my office hours today. I had three or four really interesting conversations with students during the process. It is amazing how many questions come up on a Friday afternoon. . .

progress . . .

A bit more collage material found its way onto this panel . . . not sure where it is headed, but I may have just ruined it. Something else to deal with visually. {The tangents are intentional.}

The drywall has been mudded in this small section of the studio. It has a coat of paint and could certainly use some touching up, but it is nice to be able to see what it might be one day when it is finished. Since painting this last week, classes have begun. So there most likely be little progress in the near future. It is nice to be using the space for more than band practice.

Metal panel 3 and 4

Another in the metal panel series. I am thinking of calling it "nothing new" since it is territory previously explored with vintage images and panels used in a previous iteration. I think this one is more successful than the previous few, it may have to do with the scale of the figures.

a work in progress

Anther work in progress.  . . . The storage at the top of the stairs in the studio has finally been enclosed. There is some built in storage on the south side of it that fits the bass amp nicely . . . The doors were cut down a bit to fit, but I like the effect of the panel doors. Still working on the mud. It seems like I get a few minutes here and there to do it.

metal panels

Another in the series. These will likely get worked over in the weeks to come.

new series

This is a new series, just to produce some work in the studio. I am planning to use found objects, collage and minimal mark making. At this point I am thinking no more than three elements per piece. This piece changed photo was taken. "Good" has been crossed out and "Not" written over it.
